In a joyful and historic celebration, the Jewish community of Russian Taganrog – led by Rabbi Arie Leib Tkatch – marked a milestone with the dedication of a new Torah scroll—the first written specifically for the local community in over one hundred years.
The event took place on the 14th of Tammuz, echoing the spirit of the liberation day of the sixth Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak Schneersohn.
The Torah was generously commissioned and donated by the Mordekhayev family, whose commitment to Jewish life in Taganrog has been a source of strength and inspiration.
The dedication ceremony was held in the city’s central Oktabrskaya Square and drew over 150 participants, including guests from Moscow, Rostov, Krasnodar, and beyond.
Following the procession, the community gathered for a festive meal at the “Górsky” restaurant, where warm words were shared by city officials, including Mayor Svetlana Kambulova and City Council Chair Roman Kuryakin.
The atmosphere was filled with joy, unity, and gratitude—a true reflection of the verse, “The Jews had light and joy, gladness and honor.”
