English Letters on American Day Schools and WWII Soldiers

This week’s collection of letters includes correspondence with President Ronald Reagan about Chai Elul and establishing a Jewish Day School in a small American town. An added teshura includes 15 letters from 1944 showing care for WWII soldiers, as well as a brief biography and letters to Max Schrieber, a philanthropist who oversaw the construction of over 300 Mikvaos.

Chai Elul gives vitality in the special Divine service of Elul. Soul-searching and stock-taking don’t seem to be such a joyous part of Divine service. The teachings of the Alter Rebbe and the Ba’al Shem Tov, whose birthdays are on Chai Elul, give life, vitality and strength to this important task. The President of the United States, Ronald Reagan, wrote about the significance of this important day and the Rebbe responded with a letter dated in Aseres Yemei Teshuva.

Published at the end of the booklet is a newly released letter to a rabbi that was having immense difficulty in establishing a Jewish Day School in a little city in America. The Rebbe gives great support to this undertaking and explains why, nowadays specifically, there is a greater need for Jewish schools. If a school is created, the Rebbe writes, then you will see how many people desired in having this school.

Recently, Rebbe Rebbe Responsa published a Teshura, for the wedding of the co-founder of Rebbe Responsa, with many historic newly released letters. In the fifteen letters from 1944, one can see the Rebbe’s tremendous involvement in the establishment of Merkos L’Inyonei Chinuch and the great care the Rebbe had for the Jewish soldiers fighting in WWII.

Additionally, many other letters are published, including a brief biography and letters to Max Schrieber, a philanthropist who oversaw the construction of over three hundred Mikvaos.

Rebbe Responsa kindly requests anyone who may be in possession of letters of the Rebbe in English, to send them by email so that these unique treasures can benefit the public.

These selected letters are sourced from the extensive collection of over 5,000 English letters written by the Rebbe, accessible through the Rebbe Responsa app.
