Devoted Shliach Loses Leg in Tragic Episode

With years of selfless service in Ukraine and Eretz Yisroel, Rabbi Mendy Lichtstein faces a life-altering challenge. The global Chabad community is rallying to help him regain stability and continue his mission.

For decades, Rabbi Mendy Lichtstein has lived his life for others. Whether in Zhytomyr, Ukraine—where he built a thriving Jewish community under difficult conditions—or later in Ashkelon, Eretz Yisroel, where he continued his shlichus with warmth and dedication, Rabbi Lichtstein has always been there for those in need.

But now, it is he who needs our help.

When war broke out in Ukraine, the Lichtstein family was forced to leave behind their home, community, and all they had built. The sudden upheaval of relocating to a new country and rebuilding from scratch brought with it tremendous financial and emotional strain. Yet, true to his nature, Rabbi Lichtstein pressed forward with courage and faith, continuing to help others even while facing his own challenges.

Recently, tragedy struck again. A severe and fast-spreading infection attacked Rabbi Lichtstein’s body, leaving doctors with no choice but to amputate part of his left leg. This devastating turn has left him facing a long and difficult recovery, along with mounting medical and living expenses.

Now, the time has come for us to stand for the one who has always stood for others.

Friends, fellow shluchim, and members of the wider Jewish community are joining together to support Rabbi Lichtstein and his family, helping them get back on their feet—literally and figuratively. Every contribution, large or small, is a step toward restoring stability, dignity, and hope to a family that has given so much.

Let’s show Rabbi Lichtstein that he is not alone. Together, we can help him stand strong once again.
