Mayor Bill de Blasio announced Sunday that he will be taking funding from the NYPD to instead support local youth groups, conceding to the main demands of the protesters.
“This morning we committed to move resources from the NYPD to youth and social services as part of our City’s budget. Our young people need to be reached, not policed. We can do this AND keep our city safe” the mayor tweeted.
The mayor did not disclose how much money was being diverted or which groups would receive the extra funding, saying “details will be worked out in the budget process in the weeks ahead.”
Other police reforms included in the plan include moving street vendor enforcement from the NYPD to civilian agencies.
