Charleston Chabad Acquires Neighboring Property for $13.8 Million
Chabad of Charleston, led by shluchim Rabbi Yossi and Sarah Refson, has purchased a nearly 18-acre office complex that neighbors the Chabad House for $13.8 million – far less than the $32M it was built for.
Chabad of Charleston, led by shluchim Rabbi Yossi and Sarah Refson, has purchased a nearly 18-acre office complex that neighbors the Chabad House for $13.8 million, Charleston’s Post and Courier reported.
The newly acquired property, located directly beside Chabad’s current campus on Mathis Ferry Road, marks a major expansion for the growing center of Jewish life.
The complex – which includes a 69,000-square-foot, fortress-like main building – was constructed 24 years ago for Automated Trading Desk, one of South Carolina’s most successful financial technology startups, at a cost of roughly $32 million. 14 years ago, the property changed hands for $27.3 million. Now, Chabad has managed to purchase it for half that price. Apparently, from the start, it had been intended b’hashgcha pratis for Chabad.
Rabbi Refson told The Post and Courier that the acquisition was driven by necessity. “We’re bursting at the seams,” he said. “It’s a beautiful property with tremendous potential, and it gives us the opportunity to sit down with our leadership and plan for the next 10 to 30 years – how to best utilize this space as we continue to grow.”
