Shluchim in Jalisco, Mexico, were caught in the middle of widespread violence following the killing of Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, one of the most wanted cartel leaders in Mexico and head of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel.

The military operation that targeted him triggered immediate unrest across the state, with Guadalajara, Puerto Vallarta, and other metropolitan areas experiencing burning vehicles, highway blockades, and armed clashes. Roads leading into major cities were blocked, forcing residents and visitors alike to navigate dangerous conditions.

Local shluchim, Rabbi Avraham and Elisheva Serugo, were traveling to a Jewish wedding when they became trapped on blocked highways. What was supposed to be a short trip turned into hours of delay as they navigated fires, overturned vehicles, and heavily congested routes.

“We were going to perform a wedding ceremony in Puerto Vallarta in Punta Mita”, Rabbi Serugo said. “Suddenly, all over Jalisco there were cartel blockades, and we had to turn back. The wedding is postponed for now, until it’s safe to continue.”

After hours of being stranded on the main highway, as police sought to stabilize and restore order, the Shluchim returned home safely.

“This is what Shluchim sometimes have to go through to perform a mitzvah and help another Jew”, he said.

Meanwhile, Chabad of Puerto Vallarta faced direct threats from the unrest. A firebomb detonated just across the street from the center, prompting Shluchim Rabbi Shneur and Mushkie Hecht to evacuate the building with Sifrei Torah in hand. Community members were moved to safety as chaos unfolded around the area, with local businesses also targeted and significant property damage reported.

The Serugos have been serving in Jalisco for over 26 years, maintaining a school, Torah classes, Bar Mitzvah programs, and other community services. Despite the danger, the Shluchim continue to support the Jewish population, which remains active and committed to communal life.

Authorities are working to restore order, and the community is closely monitoring developments, hoping for a swift return to normalcy. Baruch Hashem, all Shluchim and community members involved are safe, but the Jewish community in Jalisco remains vigilant while awaiting a calmer environment.
