On the 8th night of Chanukah, the Jewish Community of Brownsville gathered to light the menorah at a deeply historic location. The event took place at the Zion Triangle Memorial, a landmark currently marking its 100th anniversary since being dedicated to the many Jewish soldiers from Brownsville who fell in World War I. Standing at a site built to remember those who fought a century ago, the community gathered to celebrate the eternal victory of light.

The event began with the local children reciting the Yud Beis Pesukim, after which they received doughnuts and prizes.

Rabbi Mendel Schtroks shared a powerful teaching from the Rebbe regarding the concept that the lights of Chanukah are “einan beteilim l’olam” – they will never become extinguished. Unlike other Mitzvos where a physical threat might exempt one from action, the light of Chanukah operates on a level that darkness simply cannot extinguish. Despite those who try to destroy the public display of the Chanukah Menorah, the light of Chanukah continues to shine.

Rabbi Spielman – a strong supporter of the Brownsville community – led the lighting of the Menorah.
