Chana was one of our oldest friends here. Originally from South Africa, she was unquestionably one of the kindest, most thoughtful and generous people I’ve been privileged to have a a friend. She was utterly devoted to her family and the Jewish community. Never one to make a fuss or put herself front and center, she was like a heart that always beat steadily and faithfully. You could count on her for support, a good Jewish word, a cup of tea and a laugh, and an excellent seudah, biscotti or Seder. I never heard her say an unkind word about anyone, ever. She worked tirelessly for various Jewish causes in the community, helping in small and larger ways to move the kehillah forward in education, Yiddishkeit or tzedakah. A true tzedaket, she was one of those intensely good people for whose sake you could believe that things like global warming might not happen. Now it’s hard to understand that the sun rises without her smile.
