Bricks are everywhere—in our homes, office buildings, sidewalks, and streets. But have you ever wondered where they come from and what goes into making them?

In Yiddishkeit, brick-making holds a significant place. When the Jews were enslaved in Egypt, they toiled with bricks and mortar, building cities and homes for the Egyptians while enduring unbearable suffering.

Today, we find ourselves in a different kind of exile. This time, we are not laboring to create physical bricks. Yet, exile still requires its own form of brick-making—it is an essential component. The Zohar teaches that in our current exile, we replace physical labor with libun hilchasa—the in-depth analysis and clarification of halacha.

Or, as the Rebbe put it, “Brick-making illustrates the task of concretizing a dwelling for Hashem down below.”

In other words: We each have a brick to contribute!
