Amid the growing chaos and escalating violence in Nepal, hundreds of Israelis are seeking refuge and support at the central Chabad House in Kathmandu.
Following a crackdown on social media and rising public anger over corruption and economic instability, protests in Nepal escalated rapidly. Demonstrations, largely led by young people, turned violent after protesters set fire to the parliament, ultimately leading to the resignation of Prime Minister Khadga Prasad Oli a few days ago. The unrest has resulted in at least 22 deaths and hundreds of injuries.
Amid the chaos, Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu was temporarily closed, leaving thousands of tourists – including hundreds of Israelis – stranded with no way to leave the country.
For many of them, the central Chabad House in Kathmandu has become a vital refuge. Run by shluchim Rabbi Chezki and Chani Lifshitz, the Chabad House is providing shelter, food, safety guidance, logistical assistance to reach secure locations, and updates on curfew regulations and airport operations, as well as emotional and spiritual support.
The Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a travel advisory, urging citizens not to travel to Kathmandu and advising those already in the area to remain vigilant.
