Adventurous Photographer Ventures Into War-Torn Somalia

Renowned Lubavitch photographer Meir Alfasi has once again pushed the boundaries of travel photography in his latest journey to one of the most dangerous places on earth: Mogadishu, the capital city of Somalia.

Renowned Lubavitch photographer Meir Alfasi, whose life’s mission is to seek out and document Jewish sparks in the farthest corners of the world, has once again pushed the boundaries of where a Yid might reach. His latest journey took him to one of the most dangerous places on earth: Mogadishu, the capital city of Somalia.

Mogadishu is known as a war zone, plagued by years of violence and instability, with parts of the city under the grip of the Al-Shabaab terror group. Far from being a tourist destination, entry to the city is considered extremely risky. Alfasi arrived under heavy security and managed to tour several key sites, meeting with locals and capturing rare glimpses of life in this perilous region.

Somalia has recently made headlines in connection with reports that the Israeli government is exploring possibilities of relocating Gaza residents to other countries, with some media outlets even mentioning discussions involving Somalia. Against this backdrop, Alfasi’s presence in Mogadishu adds a fascinating dimension to his ongoing quest of uncovering hidden sparks of Yiddishkeit across Africa.
