The Rebbe did not often share his private life and family matters with the Chassidim, but on the few occasions that he did, it is our honor and privilege to mark it according to the Rebbe’s wishes. One of those days is Chof Av.
“I feel a responsibility as well as a privilege to suggest and request, etc, that all should learn together from his teachings, and contribute [tzedoka] on this day in his memory; For he devoted his life to spread Yiddishkeit among the Jews behind the Iron Curtain, resulting in his imprisonment and sentence in exile, where he perished and is now interred. May his merit protect us, amongst all of the Jewish people, Shlita.” (Motzei Tisha b’Av 5744)
The Rebbe did not often share his private life and family matters with the Chassidim, but on the few occasions that he did, it is our honor and privilege to mark it according to the Rebbe’s wishes. One of those days is Chof Av, the day on which HoRav Levi Yitzchok, the Rebbe’s father, left this world after suffering at the hands of the Communist Regime. The Rebbe personally requested that each of us use this day to learn from his father’s extraordinary self-sacrifice and unwavering commitment to Yiddishkeit.
HoRav Levi Yitzchok is also known for his depth of learning and his ability to bridge the most mystical concepts with simple understanding. The Rebbe saw it as his obligation and responsibility to share these teachings with the world, many of which were written and taught under the most arduous conditions.
As Chassidim, we have the privilege that the Rebbe asked us to ‘assist him’ in the great mitzvah of honoring one’s father by studying these teachings, especially on his Yahrtzeit.
To assist you in fulfilling the Rebbe’s personal wish, Vaad Or Vechom Hahiskashrus is pleased to provide several useful resources to help you learn from the Torah of HoRav Levi Yitzchok together with your family and community.
