Correction… Rav Avrohom Medalie, the son of Rav Shmaryahu Yehuda Leib and my grandfather, was sentenced to 8 years in camps but served only 5.5 years, from 1951 till 1956, when he was rehabilitated. My grandfather served his sentence in Inta, Komi republic, on the Arctic circle, which is not Siberia.

The mentioned case of 17 years in Siberian labor camps describes Meir Rabinovich, who was Rav Shmaryahu Yehuda Leib’s son-in-law.

I was actually named after Rav Moshe Medalie, mentioned in the article.

His son Hillel Medalie was at my Barmitzvah in Johannesburg in 1961. He came to try out for the Chief Rabbi position.

Good stuff. Not sure he was actually born to a chabad family. I seem to recall seeing a interview with his son where he says it was his father in law who brought him to lubavitch. (His father in law was a great gaon who wrote several sforim. Of note is the fact that he brings many things in the name of the rabiem which cannot be found anywhere else).
