There's another factor and this one the bochur won't tell you because he himself is unaware. In Mesivteh they are younger and automatically respect the hanholo but for a multitude of reasons by the time our bochurim come to zal its embarrassing the way they talk about the hanholo. Very little respect. No one learns from someone they don't respect.
After two years on shlichus I went through all the bochurim in zal and tried finding the common denominator between those who grew verses those who did not. To me it seemed that those that respected the hanholo grew and those that did not either stayed the same or had a yerida.

Kudos for this vital and well written article. One fundamental aspect that lies underneath all the factors mentioned was omitted. There is not enough emphasis on learning by a plurality of the parents in their own lives. If a bochur seldom sees his father learning or is not inculcated the value of Torah study by his mother, the bochur senses by osmosis that the yeshiva expects him to engage in a pursuit of skills that will never be used in the future. How can such a bochur be expected to dedicate serious effort to learn for 10 hours a day every day?
