The Rebbe, and his closest aids, were—of necessity—extremely sensitive about guarding his privacy. And, indeed it was a battle to do so! (“You can’t imagine!”) The principles went to great lengths to keep the incident secret as it happened (even the Rebbetzin didn’t know it was happening).
That is why this story remained untold until decades after his passing. As the story suggests, only when those same closest confidants said it could—and should—be told, was this story published.
