This was in France, and the one who sold me the photo was an American bal Tshuva by the name of Duchan [whose French wife had just passed away then]. Around 5750, Reb Notke Barkahn submitted a copy of that picture to the Rebbe. [Reb Nota had then moved to Riga on Shlichus]. The Rebbe acknowledged the gift, but commented that it is evidently a picture of an artist’s portrait, which would explain the fact that the beard looks wider on one side more than the other.
I’m sure that Rabbi Glazman of Riga will be able to fill in more details to this story.
