Thank you for the article. As we shared the news with our children last Sunday, we turned it into an opportunity to talk about what to do when such a shocking surprise happens near you.

1. Stay Calm, as horrible as it may be, it’s part of Hashem’s plan that we don’t understand.
2. Hide if necessary or Help if you can.
3. Use our form of ammunition to its fullest – Recite the 12 Psukim, Tanya and Tehilim Baal Peh.
4. When safe, if you don’t see family, approach another Mother with kids.

The reality of our times is that yes, now is to time to empower our children. They need to know that giving up our lives Al Kiddush Hashem still happens today just as it did with Chana and her seven sons in the times of Chanukah and not so long ago with our great grandparents in Communist Russia.

Hashem can send Moshiach K’heref Ayin. May it happen very very soon!

This healed something inside of me. We cannot ever fully protect our children. No guarantee we give would be enough, as how can we truly guarantee anything? Yet we can help their hearts and minds stay at peace in knowing that they are proud Yidden and are part of a chain of all the Yidden before them. And to know that Hashem runs the world and we are proud to be His children.

I actually thought the school’s message was really appropriate and appreciated it.

I hear your approach, but I think it might be too much for younger kids to fully process right away.
In moments like this, kids need space to feel whatever comes up along with some extra support and a sense of safety from the adults around them. I wouldn’t call that “mollycuddling” here.

Rushing to reframe or refocus right away feels too premature for kids when it’s all so raw.

While mesiras nefesh is a valuable topic to teach our children, you don’t comfort a mourner when there dead is in front of them… Don’t visit a shiva house and say Hashem has his reasons…

Learning it from the Chanukah story or revisiting it a few weeks later to bring out this theme, good use of the opportunity.
Dealing with a scared child or a big calamity, I don’t think that it is the right moment.
