I personally witnessed twice a form of chessed without fanfare that I suppose was common.

On Purim years ago, someone mentioned to me in shul that if I want to do matonos loevyonim I should pay towards the bill of a certain family in Kosher Town. I recall the family owing a large sum.

Similarly, someone one related to me a hashgacha protis episode that he somehow received an unexpected $800. By the way he mentioned that he used it to pay his Kosher Town bill.

It seems that in case of need, Shimmy would grant credit beyond normal sums. This is a form of chessed no one would know of.
