I had to go to public school. There were no credit cards in the 1950s-1960s and no money to send me to Yeshiva. I kept all halachos, took off for Yomim Tovim. In those days gym was separate for girls and boys. I belonged to GAA, girls athletic association. One earned points for coming early in the morning. Then came the final weekend. It included Shabbos. One needed the weekend to earn 50 points to earn a 'letter'. I explained that I couldn't come because it included Shabbos. The teacher gave me the 'letter' even though I had 47 points. My junior high school core teacher asked me to explain the Yomim Tovim to the class. This class had students who had been in juvenile prison already. There I was, explaining Yom Tov to Blacks, criminals, and a mix of non-Jews. HaShem helped me all the way from K-12 with only a few incidents of anti-Semitism.
