This interview has a lot to teach to many people B"H. Years ago, my son, one of the top in his class, went off to a yeshiva gedola that taught Gemara on a high level but, as I was told in advance, the hanhala wasn't known for warmth, love or putting personal effort into the students. His father was not in the picture, and he, of all people, needed that warmth, love, hadracha and answers to his questions. I couldn't convince him to find a different yeshiva, because his chavrusa/s and friends were going to that one. So he went there. He became influenced by loving, religious non-Lubavitcher relatives who lived near that yeshiva. After Shiur Daled, he dropped out of yeshiva. He has always been on the derech B"H... today he's pursuing a professional career. The outcome is not bad B"H -- but a very talented boy who could have shone as a shliach, Rav, etc. chose to leave yeshiva before Shlichus year and not to go in that direction. Yes, everything is Hashgacha Pratis. Yes, my son does his shlichus in his own way now B"H. Yes, I am very proud of him B"H. I still feel -- Where was the hanhala of that yeshiva when he needed THEIR warmth and love and hadracha? I hope that yeshiva has trained their teachers, and brought in new ones by now, to make sure every single bochur gets all that he needs.

Firstly I want to thank everyone here for taking the time to engage with the article and to write feedback.
It would be too time consuming to respond to each individual comment so instead I'm writing a general response to address some of the general points.

1. The message of Melech Basodeh is indeed powerful and amazing. Precisely because of this, it is a real shame see how in many cases it has become watered down and a throwaway cliche.
Of course this critique does not apply to everyone. If it does not apply to you, אשריך יטוב לך.
This is an idea that deserves to be engaged with in a very deep and פנימיות'דיקע way. We don't all have to internalize it in the same way. But we all should invest time and energy to interpret what this idea really means, each person אליבא דנפשיה.
We should not feel we are יוצא just by feeling good (superficially) that is king is in the field.
More than the vort is מזכה, it has to be מחייב.

2. The יסוד of my article is that even with the מלך בשדה, the avodah of elul is and must be אני לדודי - which is אתערותא דלתתא. We can never forget this. With this too we must engage with this in a real פנימיות 'דיקע way and not be יוצא with superficial inspiration.
Once again, if this message did not apply to you, אשריך וטוב לך.

3. Yes, some of the language was provocative (in olam hazeh, alma d'shikra, sometimes that's necessary to shake things up).
Anyone who was able to see past that exterior and see to the substance of what I wrote, I'm sure was able to see the positivity, power and even inspiration in it.

In case it wasn't clear, the meaning of the title is to please stop using it as a cliche or slogan and instead engage with it in a real and פנימיות'דיקע way.

4. As to some of the מראי מקומות that are being mentioned. I don't think this is the place for a detailed analysis of that. I'd be happy to engage privately with anyone that wants to have a serious and learned discussion about it.

But I will make two general points.
There is a subtle difference between saying the king himself in the field is מעורר and between saying that the knowledge that one has of the fact that the king is in the field is מעורר.
On the first point, it can be said that the king is not מעורר.
And on the second point can be said that the information itself is מעורר.
I spoke to the first point and I do not negate the second point.
And then as with anything in Chassidus, at different times the same idea was explained in different ways, according to the particular needs of that time etc.
So yes you will find some places where it emphasizes the inspiration of it, and some places where it emphasizes the lack of inspiration.
Given that I felt there has developed a recent tendency to oversimplify and water down the message, I felt it was appropriate on this occasion to specifically emphasize the fact that it is not מעורר and therefore we must be willing to roll up our sleeves and put in the hard work - עבודה בכח עצמו. And not allow ourselves to be יוצא by chanting shallow slogans.
Once again, if this critique did not apply to you אשריך וטוב לך.

To conclude: each of us should be מתבונן in the idea of מלך בשדה in a פנימיות'דיקע way and each person אליבא דנפשיה. This is the most important thing.
We can each come away with a different perspective or a different מהלך in how it resonates with us. That's ok. The main thing is we should take it seriously!

lowering standards and caring deeply about the talmidim are not and should never be a "stira".
this idea that the two are a stira is deeply steeped in our system and imho needs to be clarified.

yes, the yeshivas that deal with struggling students are forced to actually care doesn't mean that yeshivas who have high standards should somehow care less and show less attention (which is currently the situation) because they can.

like the famous story in gemara השתא נמי דעתאי עלויהו.

also there is a difference between changing standards as a moisad and dealing with an individual where they are holding.

Didnt listen to the podcast, but just reading the article. I couldn't agree more.
I want a chassidishe chinuch for my son bezras Hashem, but honestly I worry about sending him to yeshiva, will they bring out the best in him. Will they just care if he came on time, or will they show love and care as a person, and accept him and bring him in, vs being cold, only awarding academics

I dont have any children that went the mesivta/zal yeshiva system yet, but this point is so beyond important

Children need kiruv, they need you to want them, and be there for their happiness and wellbeing, and love them,

Yemin mekareves, and love is the foundation of chinuch today as the Rebbe so many times emphasised

Please can say Yeshivos reading this make sure this approach happens in your Yeshiva. Lots and lots and lots of Love to each Talmid, wanting the best for them, wanting them to shine.

Btw this is a general approach also for many parents to interanlize.

You need to love your child.
Then they'll be open to anything your telling them.

You cant be mechanech a child without the foundation of love

Well done for speaking his voice!

Thank you for pointing out what the Rebbes opinion clearly was on the matter,

The Rebbe clearly writes how when we think about Hashem bing like THE KING IN THE FIELD it automatically will awaken within us a DOUBLE Hisorerus to both make a Cheshbon Hanefesh, and also WILL AWAKEN A DEEP LOVE FOR HASHEM!
In the Rebbes Words
כשיהודי מרגיש את הקריבה הזאת של הקב"ה, מעורר הדבר בלבו התעוררות''
כפולה...גם רגש אהבה עמוק להקב"ה''
so although I don't usually like getting involved in the comments to the articles, i feel over here it's just a must be mentioned that the Rebbe clearly wanted this to be an inspirational message and something that just the thought of automatically awakens a love and closness to Hashem,
To the point where we see that in the last General letter that he sent us for Elul this is The point that he is stressing,

The title and some of the language in this article is off-putting. "The king is in the field" is one of the Rebbe’s favorite lines during this time of year.

The moshol is inherently inspiring. I'm sorry if it doesn't inspire the writer. It inspires me.

Inspire means feel excited. True inspiration is a call to action. The moshol inspires us to get out of our stuckness and go greet the king. In other words, do teshuva.

We don't have to "stop with the king in the field" to do teshuva. On the contrary, we have to start internalizing more deeply, that the king is in the field. This inspires us to do the avoda of elul, which is initiate teshuva.

Thank you for a meaningful explanation of the maamer!

When the Rebbe says בשורות טובות, that's the Rebbe's way of not giving the ברכה you're asking for. Instead he's giving a ברכה to hear good news (any good news) in the future.

This is a mistake some people have made unfortunately. They think the Rebbe have them a ברכה when in reality, they never got one

I think Rabbi Kesselman is "stuck" in the way Alter Rebbe brings the Mashal, and the context there.
It should be pretty obvious that the Rebbe brought a whole new life into the Mashal, and through it, into Elul and into us.
The Rebbe's focus on Melech Basodeh is very different than what it appears to have been doing in Likutei Torah...

In 5726 the Rebbe says that the very fact that the king is in the field IS MEORER, and nevertheless it is considered Ani Ledodi. See the explanation there. And the king welcomes everyone, even those who WANT to welcome him but DON'T because of their Yeitzer... And this in and of itself GIVES the person the KOACH to do it!

We are "not doing anyone a service" by using shock words as clickbait.

We are not doing anyone a service by trying to outsmart ourselves.

Elul is a simple (not easy - simple) Avoda of Kabolas Ol. And the king being in the field with us is the biggest KIRUV. In fact, the Rebbe (in the back of Chelek Beis or Daled - I don't recall offhand - and in other places) speaks about the king's focus being IN THE FIELD where all the work is done.

Stop with all the philosophy. Stop putting people down. Join us and celebrate and rejoice with the king in the field. Or don't. But don't try to interfere with my bliss (even if YOU happen to think it's ignorance).

Hey everybody,
I would like to clear up some rumors about what happened at Camp Emunah.
First of all, none of you were there, so it is inappropriate to spread inaccurate information about what happened and about the real people who were there.
Heres what happened, The counselors were taken on a trip to a haunted house that has been visited many times. About a week earlier, a group of 60 boys also went there without incident. During our visit, while we were inside one of the rooms, the floor collapsed. Most girls fell, and the situation was very scary. We safely evacuated everyone bh. When we came back to camp, everybody who needed medical attention got the appropriate care, and Hatzalah was contacted. The next day, everyone had the opportunity to speak with a therapist, and additional support was offered to anyone who needed.
It was scary but everyone recovered. It was a significant miracle that the only injuries were cuts and scrapes. Rather than focusing on negativity, we should recognize and be grateful to Hashem
for this outcome, as the situation could have been far more serious.
Regarding the rumor that we were threatened to be kicked out for discussing the incident, it's completely untrue. We were free to share the information that we wanted to. We chose with whom to share it to, mostly to protect our own privacy.
Finally, if anyone has videos or photographs from the event, please remember that these involve real people and events. We ask that you respect our privacy.
Thank you.

Beautiful article! The whole concept of Elul and Melech Basadeh is explained beautifully in this essay, really! But the title, and opening of the article, i dont find to resonate so much, and there is definitely an extra caution we must take before talking against something in these days which is done in a positive light. If people are saying the King is in the field, that itself is good! Sof Maaseh, Machshava Techila, were a generation of willingness and action before all else! Who knows if when someone goes out of their way to share the Moshol of Melech Baasadeh, that it itself could be the example and expression of exactly it!

Yasher Koach again, really beautiful article! Except the point of the title!

You are right! THE REBBE ASKED TO PUBLICIZE THE MASHAL!
And, more than that, the very fact that it is being mentioned comes from the deepest place in the Neshama, every yid when he hears that the king is in the field, intrinsically connects to it and is intuitive to its message, whether its fully comprehended or not.
Yes, indeed publicize it.
The message is indeed amazing.
But we have to share the correct message.

The king is close, he is accessible, he is waiting, etc. but the gilui is not me'oreir.
Elul remains a time of pure ani ldodi - isarusa d'l'sata.

I encourage you to look carefully at the sources. Perhaps the distinction is subtle, but it's important.
If we get it wrong, we are not doing anyone a service.

the Rebbe tells the moshol of melech basodesh in many of the children's rallies, and (imho) does present it as an inspiring lift up and motivator to avodas Hashem and doing the right thing, not as a way to sober them up. I would like to see this article compared to the way the Rebbe explains the moshol on the tens (or more) of occasions, and if it shtims with the Rebbe's consistent style
