They're are two approaches to these "frightening" stories. These approaches are not about HOW it is said, but WHO is saying it.
1. If you feel that the jewish people are weak and behind times, then the message conveyed with any story regarding jewish death will be filled of the same feeling. Like if you talk about the holocoust or Soviet jewery. Like those who left an empty seat for those lost in the holocoust at they're seder table. It's simple if your self esteem or jewish esteem is low and incapable of sacrifice etc. You can't transmit a powerful impenetrable jewishness.
2. If you are a proud jew, and you live, understand and experience as much of your neshama you possibly can. You realize that this world is nothing but a corridor to the real truth. You realize that hashem creates this universe every moment. Some one with this attitude will convey jewish strength even in the darkest stories.

Get involved. Learn chassidus. Wach a daily WhatsApp video of the rebbe. Realize that אין עוד מלבדו! You will then become of the second group and your kids will only become more courageous about their yiddishkeit when hearing these ~Terrifying~ stories of bravery and strength.

Happy chanuka.

in the early years, the Rebbe spent much time in printing stories.
the common thread in a large majoraty of these stories is the dedication of mesiras nefesh, which shows that this is the message to impart to children
